This role is central to building trust and acceptance with the communities we serve by designing programs, tools, and approaches that deepen understanding of social and cultural dynamics. By embedding anthropological insights into operations, the Unit Lead will strengthen MSF\u2019s commitment to a more people-centered approach, ensuring that humanitarian interventions are contextually appropriate, culturally sensitive, and ethically sound. The unit will play a transversal role to contribute to MSF becoming a more people-centered organization.<\/p>\n<p>This position will be hierarchically and functionally accountable to Executive Manager<\/p>\n<p>Tasks &amp; Responsibilities<\/p>\n<p>Strategic Responsibilities<\/p>\n<p>\tActively participate\u00a0in the development and review of the overall organizational strategy.<br \/>\n\tDevelop, review, and implement\u00a0Anthropology Unit strategy.<br \/>\n\tContribute to organization-wide strategies\u00a0and processes to advance MSF\u2019s thematic and operational priorities, its methodological approaches, and values for strong community engagement strategies.<br \/>\n\tProvide socio-cultural and situational analysis\u00a0to guide operational decisions, humanitarian access, and program design.<br \/>\n\tDevelop and implement\u00a0more people-centric and community-led approach systems and activities.<br \/>\n\tBuild knowledge\u00a0within the movement to contribute to organization learning.<\/p>\n<p>Technical and Operational Responsibilities<\/p>\n<p>Anthropology Unit Positioning, Operationalization, and Management<\/p>\n<p>\tPosition the Anthropology Unit\u00a0as a technical support platform for MSF operational missions in the region.<br \/>\n\tDevelop and implement\u00a0the Anthropology Unit framework and applicable approaches in relation to MSF field operations.<br \/>\n\tEstablish and build\u00a0the structure and the capacities of the Unit.<br \/>\n\tIdentify key areas of interest\u00a0and develop pertinent links and partnerships with operations across other MSF entities in the region and globally.<br \/>\n\tContribute to organizational decision-making\u00a0through formal and informal engagement, especially through participation in leadership meetings and cross-organizational working groups.<br \/>\n\tExternal networking\u00a0and partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>Program Development and Operations Support<\/p>\n<p>\tSupport and advise\u00a0the operations teams during the conception, implementation, and monitoring of medical and paramedical projects.<br \/>\n\tContinuously consolidate information\u00a0on local knowledge and practices during emergencies\/crises to enable productive dialogue and accommodation between affected individuals, groups and communities, and field operation teams.<br \/>\n\tSupport the operations teams\u00a0on context and security analysis and management.<br \/>\n\tOrganize, conduct, and facilitate\u00a0field visits and intersectional forums wherever and whenever it is necessary across MSF units and sections.<br \/>\n\tContribute to missions\u00a0and prepare mission reports for implementation and dissemination.<br \/>\n\tProvide rapid social\/situational analysis\u00a0during emergencies, outbreaks, and humanitarian crises.<\/p>\n<p>Build Knowledge and Learning Promotion<\/p>\n<p>\tConduct field capitalization\u00a0and operational research on thematic and emerging areas relevant to medical and paramedical projects\/programs across MSF.<br \/>\n\tInitiate and contribute\u00a0to collaborative programs for enhancing innovation, new interventions, and leadership in emerging areas of humanitarian interest across the movement.<br \/>\n\tFacilitate dissemination\u00a0of research results, learnings, and best practices through internal and external platforms including publication.<br \/>\n\tCollect, analyze, and update\u00a0cognitive material related to MSF missions in East Africa.<br \/>\n\tIdentify relevant stakeholders\u00a0and actors in anthropology applied to the humanitarian context.<br \/>\n\tDevelop, plan, and facilitate trainings\u00a0for the Unit&#8217;s and other sections as may be needed.<br \/>\n\tBuild, manage, and update\u00a0the Unit&#8217;s database.<br \/>\n\tAssist in creating and refining research questions\u00a0as a base for developing rigorous concept notes and study protocols.<br \/>\n\tEnsure methodologies\u00a0chosen are adequate and appropriate to the research question.<br \/>\n\tDraft or review study documents\u00a0to ensure adherence to MSF Ethics Review Board (ERB) guidance and requirements for ethical review.<br \/>\n\tProvide technical support and guidance\u00a0to Principal Investigator(s) and the research team at large, strengthening their research skills.<br \/>\n\tProvide editorial and writing support\u00a0of OR outputs: assist in writing manuscripts, research or policy briefs, and other outputs related to OR.<br \/>\n\tData analysis:\u00a0Provide direct support to ensure appropriate data management, solid data analysis, and theoretical interpretation of findings, including statistical analysis where applicable, based on reflexivity, positionality, and acquired theoretical knowledge on the specific topic.<br \/>\n\tSupport the sharing of research findings, both internally and externally, including publications and presentations at conferences\/workshops.<\/p>\n<p>Transversal and Intersectional Capacity Strengthening and Contribution<\/p>\n<p>\tFormulate effective interventions\u00a0for impactful responses while building local capacity for community engagement and local health promotion.<br \/>\n\tParticipate, support, advise, and foster\u00a0strategic engagement and partnership with other relevant Units, sections, and operational missions.<br \/>\n\tEngage in transversal and intersectional information-sharing\u00a0and lesson learning on key policy and strategy issues and contribute to building synergies across programmes and Sections.<\/p>\n<p>Other Responsibilities<\/p>\n<p>Ubuntu support:<\/p>\n<p>\tOffer support to the Head of Community Engagement in their implementation of the Community Engagement across the project portfolio. All support to be agreed with the Head of Community Engagement before any activities are delivered.<br \/>\n\tField visits to Ubuntu projects as per request<\/p>\n<p>Others:<\/p>\n<p>\tLead, mentor, coach and supervise staff in the Anthropology Unit.<br \/>\n\tDevelop annual plans and budgets for the Anthropology Unit. \u2022 Develop and supervise terms of reference for consultants and short-term experts as may be needed.<br \/>\n\tOrganize, contribute to, and facilitate thematic communities of practice in the region and across the MSF movement \u2022 Ensure accurate integration of EDI &amp; Safeguarding aspects into all policies and practices within the unit.<br \/>\n\tRecognize, respond, and document any form of abuse or inappropriate behavior and alert the safeguarding unit of any suspected potential abuse.<br \/>\n\tCompliance Assurance &#8211; Ensure that all data processing activities within the unit comply with relevant data protection laws and regulations in your area of operation, including the Data Protection Act, 2019 and support your team to receive necessary training in this area.<br \/>\n\tPolicy Adherence &#8211; Enforce data protection policies, procedures, and guidelines within the unit, ensuring that all team members are aware of and adhere to these protocols.<br \/>\n\tProactively participate in the individual performance management process including objective setting, performance monitoring and performance evaluation.<br \/>\n\tRecognize and reinforce strong performance in the Anthropology unit; identify and encourage improvement where needed; and ensure quality and timely performance management process is carried out for the Anthropology unit.<\/p>\n<p>Qualifications<\/p>\n<p>Education<\/p>\n<p>\tA Master\u2019s degree in Anthropology, from a recognized academic institution.<br \/>\n\tExcellent knowledge and experience\u00a0in cross\/multicultural communication and collaboration.<br \/>\n\tFluency\/excellent level\u00a0of written and spoken English; knowledge of French and other languages is an advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Experience<\/p>\n<p>\tAt least five (5) years\u00a0of demonstrated experience in medical humanitarian field operations, in any relevant field.<br \/>\n\tComplex development sector\u00a0project management experience.<br \/>\n\tExperience in knowledge generation and research, community engagement, or a similar role.<br \/>\n\tExperience working in a multi-cultural, diverse environment, including urban and rural communities.<br \/>\n\tPublished papers\u00a0would be advantageous.<br \/>\n\tDemonstrated experience in the subject matter, including design strategies in a multifaceted and diverse stakeholder organization.<br \/>\n\tCommitment to and experience of\u00a0advancing multicultural collaboration, learning, equity, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Apply Through:<\/p>\n<p>msf.or.ke<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"template":"","meta":{"_promoted":"","_job_location":"","_application":"http:\/\/msf.or.ke","_company_name":"Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF)","_company_website":"http:\/\/www.msf.org\/en\/","_company_tagline":"M\u00e9decins sans fronti\u00e8res (MSF) or Doctors Without Borders, is an international humanitarian-aid non-governmental organization (NGO) and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, best known for its projects in war-torn regions and developing countries facing endemic diseases.
