RESPONSIBILITIES<\/p>\n
Merchant Risk Assessment & Onboarding<\/p>\n
\tConduct thorough KYC\/KYB checks (CR12, KRA PIN, Director IDs).
\n\tAnalyze financial statements and bank records to determine financial viability.
\n\tPerform targeted digital audits or site visits for high-risk merchants or those with historical chargeback ratios exceeding 1%.
\n\tReview and assign accurate Merchant Category Codes (MCC) based on risk profiles.
\n\tCoordinate with Risk and Compliance departments to ensure all anti-money laundering (AML) and fraud checks are cleared.<\/p>\n
Decision Making & Risk Mitigation<\/p>\n
\tApprove, decline, or recommend conditional approvals for merchant accounts.
\n\tEstablish transaction limits, settlement cycles, and rolling reserves.
\n\tNegotiate risk terms with Sales teams without compromising bank security.<\/p>\n
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight<\/p>\n
\tScreen applicants against AML\/CFT sanctions lists (FRC, OFAC, UN) and MATCH \/ VMSS.
\n\tEnsure merchant compliance with PCI DSS data security standards.
\n\tMaintain detailed audit trails for every underwriting decision.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Portfolio Monitoring & Reporting<\/p>\n
\tMonitor for “Transaction Laundering” and suspicious volume spikes.
\n\tInvestigate accounts with high chargeback ratios and initiate terminations if needed.
\n\tEscalate high-risk trends to the Manager, Card Operations, Manager, Specialist Merchant Sales and Head Card, Payments
\n\tMonitor dormant Terminals and recommend actions to various sales teams and Merchant analysts<\/p>\n
KEY RELATIONSHIP<\/p>\n
\tInternal: Card Operations Team, Merchant Acquiring team, E-commerce team, Sales, Fraud Investigation Unit, Finance, Legal, and IT.
\n\tExternal: Central Bank of Kenya (CBK), FRC, Card Schemes (Visa, MasterCard, CUP, Payment Processors, Merchants (as needed) Payment Processors, Merchants (as needed), and Merchants<\/p>\n
Requirements
\nQUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE<\/p>\n
\tBachelor\u2019s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Law, or a related field.
\n\tMinimum 2-3 years\u2019 experience in risk management or merchant underwriting.
\n\tDeep knowledge of Kenyan regulatory frameworks (POCAMLA, CBK Guidelines).<\/p>\n

\n\tProficiency in risk-scoring models and data analysis tools.
\n\tAbility to work independently and meet tight onboarding deadlines.
