About the Role<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
We\u2019re looking for an experienced\u00a0Back-End \/ Full-Stack Engineer\u00a0to design, build, and scale the core services that power Umba\u2019s digital banking platform.<\/p>\n
You\u2019ll work primarily in Python (Flask, FastAPI), building secure, high-performance APIs used by tens of thousands of customers across Africa \u2014 while also contributing across the stack where needed.<\/p>\n
This is not a traditional engineering role.<\/p>\n
We operate in an\u00a0AI-native development environment, where engineers leverage tools like Claude Code, Codex, and other LLM-based systems to accelerate development, generate code, and iterate quickly.<\/p>\n
As a result, the role increasingly focuses on:<\/p>\n
\tDefining clear technical specifications
\n\tOrchestrating AI agents to implement systems
\n\tReviewing, validating, and hardening generated code
\n\tBuilding robust feedback loops and quality control systems<\/p>\n
You\u2019ll collaborate closely with the Data and Product teams to shape our architecture and ship features quickly and reliably.<\/p>\n
This is a highly technical, in-office role based in Nairobi. You\u2019ll join a small, high-performing team operating at speed, where ownership is expected and impact is immediate.<\/p>\n

Responsibilities<\/p>\n
\tDesign, build, and maintain scalable backend services using Python (Flask, FastAPI)
\n\tContribute to front end development (NextJS)
\n\tContribute across the stack when needed (APIs, integrations)
\n\tDefine clear technical specs that can be executed by AI-assisted development workflows
\n\tUse AI tools (e.g. Claude Code, Codex) to accelerate development while maintaining high quality
\n\tReview, test, and validate AI-generated code to ensure correctness, security, and performance
\n\tArchitect systems with a focus on reliability, observability, and scalability
\n\tBuild strong testing and validation pipelines (unit, integration, automated QA)
\n\tCollaborate with\u00a0Data teams to deliver end-to-end features
\n\tDebug complex production issues and implement robust fixes
\n\tContinuously improve engineering velocity through tooling and process improvements<\/p>\n
Skills and Qualifications<\/p>\n
\t5+ years of software engineering experience in production environments
\n\tStrong proficiency in Python and backend frameworks (Flask, FastAPI)
\n\tIntermediate experience with Frontend
\n\tExperience building and scaling APIs and distributed systems
\n\tComfortable working across the stack (backend + some frontend exposure preferred)
\n\tStrong system design skills and understanding of software architecture principles<\/p>\n
AI-Native Engineering Experience (increasingly important):<\/p>\n
\tExperience using AI coding tools (Claude Code, Codex, GitHub Copilot, etc.) in daily workflows
\n\tAbility to write clear, structured technical specs and prompts for code generation
\n\tStrong code review skills, especially for validating AI-generated outputs
\n\tUnderstanding of tradeoffs, failure modes, and quality risks in AI-assisted development
\n\tExperience building guardrails: testing, validation, and monitoring for generated code
\n\tFamiliarity with modern development workflows (Git, CI\/CD, Docker)
\n\tExperience with Linux\/Unix environments<\/p>\n
Bonus:<\/p>\n
\tExperience in fintech, lending, or payments systems
\n\tExposure to data\/ML systems or model deployment
\n\tExperience with blockchain or crypto-related systems<\/p>\n
