Job description
To perform reviews and assessments of documents submitted by authorisation holders, as assigned, based on an in-depth understanding of established legal, regulatory and organisational documents, processes and guides, in the area of Mechanical Engineering and related Nuclear Safety technical areas.
Minimum requirements
NQF level 7 in Mechanical Engineering
Minimum of 3 years regulatory or industry experience
Knowledge and experience related to:
Understanding of the relevant legislation governing the nuclear regulation industry in South Africa
In depth knowledge of the relevant engineering codes and standards (ASME, SANS, R-CCM etc.), that govern the design, manufacturing, procurement and related activities within the nuclear industry
Experience in mechanical design analysis including the use of finite element computer programs
Working knowledge of the current licensing bases (SAR, KLBM, OTS, etc.) at a nuclear power plant
Working knowledge of mechanical design principles including, procurement quality assurance, plant classifications, component specification development and plant configuration control and
Working knowledge of various engineering change processes (modifications, temporary alterations and equivalencies)
Duties and Responsibilities
Perform reviews and assessments, based on an in-depth understanding of established legal, regulatory and organisational documents, processes and guides, of technical submissions required for new applications
Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams in performing reviews and assessments
Review of submissions such as plant modifications, changes to plant classifications and nuclear procurement specifications, changes to licensing and design bases documents and change to related processes
Perform mechanical design analysis using computer programs as benchmarking calculations
Participate in the supplier evaluations, assessment, surveillances and audits performed by the authorization holder
Provide engineering support to the Compliance, Assurance and Enforcement (CAE) function, with respect to issues related to plant changes, classifications, specifications, equivalencies, commercial dedications, manufacturing and procurement quality assurance
Represent organisation in meeting with external stakeholders
Handle both simple and complex systems assessments
Provide input into the development of regulatory standards, practices and guides
Participate in national and international forums
Represent organisation in meetings with external stakeholders
Participate in other NNR work outside departmental as required e.g. emergency exercise etc.
Mentoring of junior members
Participate in performance of audits and inspections.
