Purpose of the job:
Responsible for ensuring that plant and production equipment is maintained to required operational and safety standards through effective preventative and breakdown maintenance. The role includes attending to day-to-day breakdowns, supporting maintenance planning, mentoring apprentices, and carrying out mechanical and electrical tasks as required to ensure optimal plant performance.
Qualifications and Expertise Required (Must)
Education & Certification
Grade 12 (Matric)
Trade-tested Millwright (Red Seal) – essential
Relevant post-matric qualification (NQF Level 3 or higher)
Welding certification – advantageous
Experience:
Minimum 3–5 years’ relevant experience as a Millwright
Experience in production, plant, workshop, and maintenance environments
Exposure to chemical or processing plants will be advantageous
Proven experience in both mechanical and electrical maintenance
Proven experience in maintenance and repair of industrial equipment
Additional Requirements
Awareness of MERSETA apprenticeship requirements
Knowledge & Technical Skills:
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, schematics, and technical manuals
Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills (mechanical and electrical)
Welding skills: ARC, TIG, Argon
Mechanical fitting and alignment, and pump alignment skills
Electrical reticulation and basic control systems knowledge
Basic understanding of PLCs, hydraulics, pneumatics and automated systems
Proficient in the use of hand tools and workshop equipment
Sound knowledge of engineering principles and maintenance practices
Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act
Computer literacy (MS Word and Excel)

Reporting Line
Reports to the Maintenance Team Leader
General Functions:
Ensure cost-effective maintenance by identifying inefficiencies and implementing corrective actions
Identify and maintain critical spares, tools, and consumables
Participate in plant risk assessments and SHEQ initiatives
Ensure all work is carried out under the correct permit-to-work system (e.g., hot work, confined space, lockout/tagout)
Issue and sign off maintenance clearance certificates where required
Ensure compliance with The company standards and all company safety rules and regulations
Installations & Fabrication:
Install and commission processing equipment (e.g., pumps, piping, mechanical structures, agitators)
Fabricate steel and piping as required
Perform ARC, TIG, Argon, and other welding methods
Conduct pipe fitting, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives
Assist with planning and installation of new projects
Accurately complete all job cards and maintenance records
Maintenance:
Execute preventative and breakdown maintenance on plant equipment
Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and automated systems including processing plant, effluent systems, agitators, pumps, and forklifts
Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities
Ensure good housekeeping standards in the workshop
Carry out ad hoc mechanical and electrical tasks within scope of competence as directed by the Team Leader
Documentation & Compliance
Complete all job cards, maintenance records, and checklists accurately and timeously
Develop, review, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and related maintenance documentation
Maintain proper documentation for audits and compliance purposes
Ensure adherence to company policies, SHEQ standards, and legal requirements
