\n\tA vacancy exists for a Professional Nurse (Apheresis)
\n\tGeneral Medical Department (Paterson, Grade C2)<\/p>\n
Purpose of the Job<\/p>\n
\tAssist in the recruitment and bleeding of single donor platelet donors
\n\tScreening, medical assessment and monitoring of single donor platelet donors
\n\tClinical management of adverse donation events in the donors
\n\tOperation and basic understanding of apheresis machines and associated technology
\n\tEnsuring the collection of the safest blood products possible<\/p>\n
Requirements
\nMinimum Requirements<\/p>\n
\tMatriculation Certificate
\n\tDiploma in Nursing Science
\n\tRegistration with the South African Nursing Council
\n\tA Code 8 driver\u2019s licence without endorsements would be an added advantage
\n\tMulti-lingual
\n\tVenepuncture\/phlebotomy experience is essential
\n\tPrevious blood transfusion experience would be an added advantage
\n\tComputer Literate<\/p>\n
A combination of the following skills, knowledge and attributes is required:<\/p>\n
\tGood interpersonal skills and a friendly disposition
\n\tPunctuality
\n\tAccuracy in data collection
\n\tMust be able to work as part of a team
\n\tMust be able to cope in a high stress environment and be able to \u2018trouble-shoot\u2019
\n\tSkilled in customer services and the ability to deal with the public
\n\tMust be willing to work after-hours<\/p>\n

In... read more the 1930s, transfusion practice was in its most basic phase of development. Hospitals would request a donation and when a suitable donor was found, they would report to the hospital. There, blood would be transfused directly from the donor to the recipient with only a screen separating them \u2013 a far cry from today\u2019s procedures! The Service was able to provide blood serum and whole blood to military hospitals for the duration of the Second World War from 1939. In 1942, the Service obtained its own building in St. George\u2019s Street where three donors could be accommodated at a time.
