PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:<\/p>\n
\tA Senior Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the Department of Zoology and School of Biological Sciences. An academic at this level is also expected to play a role in scholarship, research, post graduate supervision and\/or professional activities.
\n\tTo build on the existing strengths of the subject group, the incumbent will be required conduct research in the area of Herpetology (study of amphibians and reptiles), teach ecology at undergraduate level as well as modules within the BSc Honours in Environmental Sciences programmes.<\/p>\n
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:<\/p>\n
Teaching and Learning:<\/p>\n
\tSupport with teaching and learning of undergraduate and Honours modules with focus of applied biodiversity and conservation ecology.
\n\tConduct of tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, and workshops.
\n\tActively involved in the development of new courses where needed.
\n\tOrganise and lead official undergraduate and Honours field excursions.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Research and Innovation:<\/p>\n
\tInitiate research projects and supervise postgraduate students.
\n\tConduct research, publish and engage in second, third and fifth-stream income generating projects.
\n\tCoordinate and assist with student training on the amphibian collection of the subject group.
\n\tMaintain academic scholarship and involvement in professional activities and contribute to professional organisations.<\/p>\n
Social responsiveness and industrial involvement:<\/p>\n
\tLeading in community engagement activities\/projects.
\n\tTo develop community-focused biodiversity and conservation projects.
\n\tParticipate in ongoing community engagement projects.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Academic leadership, management, and administration:<\/p>\n
\tAssist add\/or take proactive actions to develop and train students and members of the subject group.
\n\tServe on related research\/ethics\/integrity\/management committees.<\/p>\n
Minimum requirements<\/p>\n
\tA\u00a0PhD (NQF level 10) in Zoology or Environmental Sciences with specialisation in Herpetology.
\n\tA minimum of 3 years\u2019 teaching experience at a tertiary level.
\n\tSound practical experience to lead students in work integrated learning and field excursions.
\n\tSupervision of postgraduate students.
\n\tDemonstrate evidence through lead authorship on research collaboration publications.
\n\tRelevant work experience in herpetology and conservation ecology.<\/p>\n
RECOMMENDATIONS \/ ADDED ADVANTAGES:<\/p>\n
\tRegistration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP).
\n\tMembership with national and international learned scientific societies.<\/p>\n
KEY FUNCTIONAL\/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:<\/p>\n
\tKnowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance in the fields of herpetology and conservation ecology.
\n\tA proven publication record in accredited scholarly journals \u2013 proven track record with first author collaborative publications.
\n\tEvidence of supervising and successful completion post graduate students (M level).
\n\tRecord of national and international networking, collaboration, and recognition (e.g. NRF evaluation).
\n\tProficiency in taxonomy.
\n\tEvidence of competency and accreditation in animal research ethics.
\n\tCompetency in biological sampling, specimen curation, and molecular analyses of samples.<\/p>\n
