RESPONSIBILITIES:<\/p>\n
\tThe incumbent will have an academic mandate of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with an emphasis on population ecology. They will supervise honours, masters and doctoral students, and produce research outputs through scientific papers published in international high-impact journals, books, and conference presentations. The incumbent will be expected to raise research funds and build a strong, internationally acclaimed research programme in terrestrial vertebrate population ecology.<\/p>\n
In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for:<\/p>\n
\tCurriculum development, upgrading and updating course material;
\n\tParticipating in professional scientific societies;
\n\tParticipating in community engagement activities;
\n\tActive involvement in Departmental, Faculty, and\/or University administrative tasks.<\/p>\n
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:<\/p>\n
\tPhD in Ecology, Wildlife Management, Zoology, Conservation Biology or similar; and
\n\tEngagement with the public and stakeholders, and\/or service to the scientific community in field of research;<\/p>\n
For appointment at the level of SENIOR LECTURER, the following additional minimum requirements apply:<\/p>\n
\tPostdoctoral experience or evidence of early career research (e.g., NRF rating in Y or P category);
\n\tEvidence of current postgraduate student supervision at masters and\/or doctoral level;
\n\tEvidence of supervision of graduated masters students;
\n\tRecent evidence of research outputs in the field of terrestrial vertebrate population ecology at a rate of at least two publications per year in ISI-listed journals (average over five years), or any other evidence showing recent and sustained engagement in the discipline;
\n\tAt least two (2) years of tertiary teaching experience;
\n\tExperience in module coordination; and
\n\tEvidence of participation in departmental committees;<\/p>\n
For appointment at the level of ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, the following additional minimum requirements apply:<\/p>\n
\tEvidence of being an established researcher (e.g., NRF rating in C category);
\n\tEvidence of current postgraduate student supervision at masters and doctoral level;
\n\tEvidence of supervision of graduated masters and doctoral students;
\n\tRecent evidence of research outputs in the field of terrestrial vertebrate population ecology at a rate of at least three publications per year in ISI-listed journals (average over five years);
\n\tAt least five (5) years of tertiary teaching experience;
\n\tExperience in module coordination and module curriculum development; and
\n\tEvidence of participation in departmental- and faculty committees;<\/p>\n
For appointment at the level of PROFESSOR, the following additional minimum requirements apply:<\/p>\n
\tEvidence of being an established researcher that has international recognition (e.g., NRF rating in C1 category and above);
\n\tEvidence of current postgraduate student supervision at masters and doctoral level;
\n\tEvidence of supervision of graduated masters and doctoral students that have gone on to fill academic, postdoctoral or research roles;
\n\tRecent evidence of research outputs in the field of terrestrial vertebrate population ecology at a rate of at least four publications per year in ISI-listed journals (average over five years);
\n\tAt least eight (8) years of tertiary teaching experience;
\n\tExperience in module coordination, and module and programme curriculum development, with evidence of leadership in teaching and learning; and
\n\tEvidence of leadership in faculty- and university committees and decision making.<\/p>\n
REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):<\/p>\n
\tInnovative thinking and new ideas on how to expand their field of research in Africa and beyond;
\n\tStrong quantitative and\/or geospatial analytical skills;
\n\tExcellent language and communication skills in English.<\/p>\n
ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:<\/p>\n
\tEvidence of the application of population genetics\/molecular biology within population ecological research, or active collaboration and contribution to wildlife management;
\n\tDemonstrated capacity to work in multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary teams;
\n\tRegistration or willingness to apply for registration with the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) as a Professional Natural Scientist.<\/p>\n
