Purpose of the role:<\/p>\n
\tThe Senior Mining Surveyor is responsible for managing and executing all mine surveying functions to support safe and efficient mining operations. This includes GPS-based field surveys, Drone based field surveys, volumetric stockpile reporting, reconciliations, photogrammetry, mine planning support, civil construction surveys, and rehabilitation planning. The role ensures accurate spatial data, compliance with legal survey requirements, and timely delivery of high-quality survey outputs to operational and management teams.<\/p>\n
Key Responsibilities:
\nSurveying & Data Acquisition<\/p>\n
\tConduct high-precision GPS, Drone and total station surveys for mining, engineering, and surface infrastructure.
\n\tPerform daily, weekly, and monthly production surveys to support mining operations.
\n\tMaintain and update mine survey control networks and benchmark systems.<\/p>\n
Stockpile Surveys, Volumes & Reconciliation<\/p>\n
\tPerform stockpile surveys using GPS, drone photogrammetry, and total station.
\n\tGenerate volumetric calculations and produce accurate daily, weekly and monthly mining and stock reports.
\n\tConduct inventory reconciliations between survey volumes, plant figures, and dispatch data.
\n\tEnsure compliance with audit requirements for stock reporting. \u00a0<\/p>\n
Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing<\/p>\n
\tPlan and execute drone flights for photogrammetry and mapping.
\n\tProcess imagery into orthomosaics, DTM\/DSM, and point clouds.
\n\tIntegrate drone data into mine planning and geotechnical analysis.
\n\tEnsure drone operations comply with regulatory procedures (CAA\/SACAA, etc.).<\/p>\n
Mine Planning & Design Support<\/p>\n
\tProvide survey inputs for short-, medium-, and long-term mine planning.
\n\tAssist planning engineers with pit designs, dump designs, haul roads, and excavation limits.
\n\tSet out and verify blast patterns, ore boundaries, cut lines, and excavation limits.
\n\tMonitor pit walls, slopes, and stability using survey data.<\/p>\n
Civil Engineering Survey Work<\/p>\n
\tConduct surveys for civil construction, such as haul roads, stormwater structures, foundations, platforms, pipelines, and plant expansions.
\n\tProvide setting-out for contractors and verify as-built data.
\n\tMaintain accurate as-built documentation for project completion.<\/p>\n
Environmental & Rehabilitation Planning<\/p>\n
\tProduce rehabilitation survey plans and track progress of rehab areas.
\n\tSupport environmental compliance by providing accurate survey data for land disturbance, topsoil management, and closure planning.
\n\tMonitor and report on rehabilitated landform stability and drainage compliance.<\/p>\n
Reporting & Compliance<\/p>\n
\tPrepare survey reports, maps, plans, section drawings, and 3D models.
\n\tEnsure compliance with mine standards, legal survey specifications, and health & safety rules.
\n\tMaintain digital and hard-copy survey records in accordance with regulatory requirements.
\n\tSupervise and mentor junior surveyors and survey assistants.<\/p>\n
Minimum Requirements:<\/p>\n
\tNational Diploma or Degree in Mine Surveying, Geomatics, or related field.
\n\tGovernment Mine Surveyor Certificate (advantage or required, depending on operation).
\n\tMinimum 5\u20138 years\u2019 mining surveying experience, ideally in open pit or underground mines.
\n\tExperience with drones\/UAVs for mining applications.
\n\tValid SACNASP, IMSSA, or PLATO registration (advantage).
\n\tValid driver\u2019s licence.<\/p>\n
Skills and Competencies:<\/p>\n
\tAdvanced GPS, GNSS, and total station proficiency.
\n\tStrong knowledge of photogrammetry and drone survey processing (Pix4D, Agisoft, etc.).
\n\tProficient in mining software: Surpac, Vulcan, MinePlan, Datamine, or similar.
\n\tHigh competence in AutoCAD\/Civil 3D or equivalent.
\n\tExcellent analytical, reporting, and problem-solving skills.
\n\tStrong communication and ability to work cross-functionally with mining, geology, engineering, and environmental teams.
\n\tAbility to lead and mentor survey teams.<\/p>\n
