Purpose of the position:<\/p>\n
\tTo deliver comprehensive care, which includes and integrated approach to the management of inmates with opioid use disorder (OUD), HIV, TB, STIs, viral hepatitis, and mental health issues. Additionally, the nurse clinician is instrumental in facilitating successful referrals for inmates to community-based OAT programmes following their release, providing patient education, and enhancing the effectiveness of the OAT project through data collection and feedback.<\/p>\n
Minimum Requirements\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
\tMinimum 5 years\u2019 experience in nursing after registration
\n\tExperience working with Department of correctional services (DCS)
\n\tExperience in IHI QI methodology
\n\tFacilitation
\n\tDegree \/ diploma
\n\tAdult Primary Care Certificate
\n\tRegistration with the South African Nursing Council as a Professional Nurse
\n\tNIMART training and certified
\n\tOAT training
\n\tRTCQI certficate
\n\tProficiency in English & IsiZulu languages
\n\tValid code 8 driver\u2019s license<\/p>\n
Duties and Responsibilities\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
\tConduct clinical assessments, screenings, and examinations for HIV, hepatitis, TB, STIs, and opioid use.
\n\tIdentify and manage opioid dependency, withdrawal, and overdose using approved screening tools.
\n\tInterpret test results, consult with medical officers when needed, and explain treatment plans to inmates.
\n\tProvide daily OAT dosing, ART initiation and management, PrEP provision, and follow-up care according to guidelines.
\n\tMaintain accurate clinical documentation, including Schedule 6 drug books and medical charts.
\n\tUpdate all programme registers such as ART, HTS, PrEP, viral hepatitis, referral, and linkage registers.
\n\tManage medication supply, storage, and distribution according to Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP).
\n\tMonitor programme data, track targets, validate referrals, and submit clinical reports.
\n\tProvide health education and awareness on HIV, hepatitis, TB, opioid dependency, withdrawal, and overdose prevention.
\n\tDeliver skills transfer to DCS clinicians on ART, PrEP, TB, viral hepatitis, and OAT guidelines.
\n\tParticipate in events, campaigns, and stakeholder engagement meetings.
\n\tImplement quality assurance processes including RTCQI, QC, PT, and SPI-RT assessments.
\n\tIdentify risks, implement corrective actions, and ensure compliance with infection control and safety protocols.
\n\tMentor and supervise DCS nurses performing OAT-related procedures and support their clinical skills development.
\n\tMonitor OAT patients for clinical changes, provide counselling, and support adherence to treatment plans.
\n\tEngage in continuous professional development through training, workshops, and guideline updates.
\n\tAssist with QI project planning, data analysis, and support facility-based QI teams.
\n\tParticipate in QI meetings, provide onsite mentorship, and complete all related reporting.
\n\tComplete administrative requirements including timesheets, monthly reports, and programme documentation.<\/p>\n
