\tWe currently seek to appoint a Technical Manager to lead technical development, research and development initiatives, process optimisation, efficiency improvement, and standardisation across flexographic printing, extrusion, lamination, and converting processes. The role focuses on improving quality, reducing waste and downtime, supporting innovation, and ensuring consistent technical performance of plant operations. The role also supports operational continuity by maintaining sufficient cross-functional production knowledge to ensure technical stability during key personnel absences.<\/p>\n
Key Duties and Responsibilities\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0
\nProduct & Material Development (Primary Mandate of the Role)<\/p>\n
\tEvaluate new substrates, inks, adhesives, coatings, and specialty films.
\n\tDevelop packaging formulations to enable new markets.
\n\tConduct and oversee internal and external product trials.
\n\tSupport innovation initiatives and customer development projects.
\n\tStandardise product formulations and technical configurations.<\/p>\n
Process Development & Optimisation<\/p>\n
\tDrive continuous improvement initiatives.
\n\tOptimise machine speeds while maintaining or improving quality standards.
\n\tDevelop, improve and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
\n\tIdentify and eliminate process inefficiencies and over-engineered product designs.
\n\tMaintain working knowledge of production planning, scheduling, and shift performance to support operational continuity when required.<\/p>\n
Efficiency & Lean Operations<\/p>\n
\tApply Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement principles.
\n\tReduce changeover times and setup inefficiencies.
\n\tImprove Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE).
\n\tOptimise equipment utilisation and process stability.
\n\tIdentify and drive cost-reduction initiatives and reduce scrap, rework, and waste.
\n\tSupport the use of recycled materials where technically feasible.
\n\tMonitor and improve utility efficiency including compressed air systems.
\n\tMonitor & optimise water cooling systems for extrusion and printing equipment.
\n\tAnalyse and reduce unplanned downtime.
\n\tProvide technical input into preventative maintenance strategies.<\/p>\n
Quality & Technical Problem Solving<\/p>\n
\tLead root-cause analysis of recurring defects using structured methods.
\n\tDefine and monitor technical quality metrics.
\n\tSupport customer complaint investigations and corrective actions.<\/p>\n
Data, Systems & Standardisation<\/p>\n
\tEstablish and monitor technical production KPIs.
\n\tDevelop structured protocols for trials and sample requests.
\n\tSupport development of technical configuration and quotation tools.
\n\tPromote data-driven decision-making in operations.<\/p>\n
Training & Knowledge Transfer<\/p>\n
\tBe involved with the training department in technical training of operators, supervisors, sales teams and support staff.<\/p>\n
Educational Requirements\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
\tPolymer science\/Chemistry degree (BSc\/B-Tech) or equivalent
\n\tDiploma in Plastics Manufacturing an added advantage\u00a0<\/p>\n
Experience Requirements\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
\tAt least 5 years\u2019 experience in the manufacturing of flexible plastic packaging<\/p>\n
