The Role<\/p>\n
\tThe Safety Officer will ensure the implementation and enforcement of safety policies, procedures, and regulations within an organization, promoting a safe and healthy work environment while minimising risks and preventing accidents or injuries.
\n\tThey are responsible for identifying potential hazards, conducting safety training, and facilitating compliance with health and safety standards to protect employees and the workplace.<\/p>\n
Key responsibilities include:<\/p>\n
\tMonitor compliance of appointed contractors and give guidance where required.
\n\tMonitor and maintain emergency response plans and procedures for various scenarios, such as fires, chemical spills, and security threats.
\n\tMonitor and assist in environmental impact assessments and develop strategies to minimize the organisation’s environmental footprint.
\n\tConduct regular audits and inspections on contractors to identify and address compliance issues.
\n\tIdentify potential hazards and risks in the workplace or operational processes.
\n\tDevelop and implement risk mitigation strategies and safety measures.
\n\tEnsure that documentation is organized and easily accessible.
\n\tEnsure project team compliance with corporate, legal, and regulatory HSSE requirements, including training and certification.
\n\tMaintain project specific HSSE management systems, including training, incident reporting, inspections, and audits.
\n\tEstablish and maintain positive relationships with appointed contractors.
\n\tSupport contracting and procurement processes, ensuring contractor compliance with regulatory, corporate, and functional systems and policies; develop bridging elements where necessary.
\n\tEngage with stakeholders through meetings, presentations, and campaigns as needed.
\n\tOversee the reporting and investigation of accidents, incidents, near-misses, and security breaches.
\n\tAnalyze root causes and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrences.<\/p>\n
Education & Experience<\/p>\n
\tTertiary qualification(s) in Environmental science \/ management and relevant Safety training in South Africa
\n\tMinimum 4-5 years of experience in Safety, Health & Environment field.
\n\tAn understanding and working knowledge of safety, health & environmental legislation, in particular the OHS Act, National Environmental Management Act and related Regulations
\n\tAccreditation of the HSSE system under ISO 45001.
\n\tA strong technical foundation with a solid understanding of the full spectrum of major civil and electrical projects
\n\tDetailed knowledge of applicable standards, laws and regulations for windfarm construction and operations in South Africa
\n\tAbility to manage project strategy implementation while ensuring quality control and attention to HSSE details
\n\tExtensive experience in the areas of hazard identification techniques (HIRA, HAZOPS, HAZIDs, Pre-start-up readiness reviews, etc.) in addition to contractor assurance and reporting skills
\n\tWorking knowledge of incident investigation processes, underpinned by strong analytical \/ root cause analysis skills
\n\tMature business judgment regarding people, project, and process-related issues
\n\tExceptional leadership, personnel management (including conflict resolution), and coaching \/ mentoring skills
\n\tTrack record of delivery in complex, challenging and preferably in remote environments
\n\tDesirable to have wind farm project delivery experience in a construction environment.
\n\tDesirable to have sound knowledge on the lifting safe working procedures for lifting on wind farms.
\n\tDesirable to have ability to motivate contractors towards compliance.
\n\tDesirable to have competence for \u201cWorking at Heights\u201d.
