Main purpose of the position:<\/p>\n
\tTo carry out short-, mid- and long-term planning, developing, national coverage and projects for all SABC News platforms as well as the managing thereof.<\/p>\n
Key Accountabilities:<\/p>\n
\tConceptualise and implement News planning and Project Plan for SABC News and Current Affairs
\n\tDevelop and operationalise News planning principles for SABC News in line with the public mandate and the Division\u2019s vision.
\n\tResponsible for the short-, medium- and long-term planning for the treatment, development, and management of the coverage of national events or events or issues that require coordinated coverage
\n\tProvide support and input in the development and implementation of SABC News and Current Affairs strategy.
\n\tDevelop and Implement SABC News operational plan for the unit and guide teams to achieve business unit objectives.
\n\tPlan and manage live elements and broadcast plans for key stories and big events in conjunction with all Editors.
\n\tInitiate and facilitate brain storming sessions to ensure creative execution ideas for coverage and setting up material for forthcoming events and themed coverage as required
\n\tPrepare, interrogate and supervise diary entries and suggest story sources and \u00a0guests where applicable
\n\tInitiate ideas for coverage and setting up material for forward planning
\n\tOversee and authorise deployments for Outside Broadcasts
\n\tEnsure that obits and profiles are prepared according to the required editorial quality standards, on time and for all relevant languages and platforms.
\n\tCompile, Manage and oversee the utilization of the Unit budget cost effectively
\n\tIntroduce and implement corrective measures to ensure financial discipline and accountability.
\n\tConsult with Divisional Finance to determine budget requirements.
\n\tManage and authorize payments for all the logistical services, travel arrangements, outside broadcasts, over time, independent contractors (freelancers) and additional work contracts etc
\n\tCompliance with broadcasting act and all related regulatory frameworks and legislative requirements.
\n\tCompliance to all related policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
\n\tDevelop and maintain constructive and effective relationships with all stakeholders.
\n\tCommunication with other specialist desks, News\/Current Affairs editors and all relevant SABC platforms
\n\tIdentify, mitigate, and manage News and current affairs editorial risks
\n\tCommunicate with stakeholders to ensure optimal delivery on all News and Current Affairs platforms.
\n\tBuild a network of national and international sources, including links with a wide range of professional research institutions, specialist researchers and news research units.
\n\tContract and manage the SABC\u2019s Performance Management System with the team in accordance with the organizational policies and procedures.
\n\tAllocate responsibilities and scheduling of teams.
\n\tManage available staff and ensure fair and balanced distribution of work.
\n\tCoach, mentor and develop team members
\n\tProvide input into adequate staffing, succession planning and effective leadership.
\n\tProvide input on attracting, retaining and rewarding staff.
\n\tManage employee relations to ensure conducive and productive working environment.
\n\tCommunicate effectively \u00a0with teams<\/p>\n
Requirements:<\/p>\n
\tDiploma\/Degree ( NQF 6\/7) in journalism, Communication, Media Studies, or relevant discipline
\n\t10 years\u2019 experience in news and current affairs of which 4 should be at management level.
\n\tProven work experience as a journalist
\n\tPortfolio of executed news broadcasting projects
\n\tThorough understanding of project management principles and practice
\n\tWell-developed decision-making skills
\n\tStrong problem-solving capability
\n\tSound negotiating skills
\n\tKnowledge of business management principles and sound governance within a news environment
\n\tOutstanding writing skills and ability to plan long-term projects
\n\tFull understanding of the broadcast and digital environment
\n\tUnderstanding of the complexities of public broadcasting
\n\tComputer literacy is essential (MS Word, Excel, and Outlook)
\n\tExcellent communication (verbal and written)
\n\tGood, credible, and reliable professional network
\n\tAn active and trusted social media presence
\n\tKnowledge of PFMA and other relevant legislative prescripts<\/p>\n
