Technical Areas Reporting to: Production, Supply Chain, QA<\/p>\n
\tMain Purpose of the Job (statement about why the role is there, what the role is to achieve): Engineering Manager role is to lead, plan, and direct all engineering, maintenance, and technical activities within the manufacturing plant to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of all equipment, utilities, and facilities.
\n\tThe role is responsible for driving plant availability, engineering excellence, regulatory compliance, and continuous improvement, while ensuring that engineering resources, capital projects, and maintenance strategies support production targets, food safety standards, cost objectives, and long-term plant performance.<\/p>\n
Job Description<\/p>\n
Production & Materials Planning<\/p>\n
\tPlan, direct, and coordinate engineering activities in a manufacturing plant, including the design, construction, modification, performance, and maintenance of equipment and machinery.
\n\tManage engineering aspects of capital projects: design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and handover to achieve project objectives.
\n\tMaintain strong communication with shift and line managers to ensure operational alignment.
\n\tComply with company Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP).
\n\tWork in accordance with Food Safety requirements to ensure the quality of finished products.
\n\tEnsure adherence to and compliance with the OHS Act and GMR2 requirements.
\n\tOversee day-to-day activities such as setting standards\/policies for installation, modification, inspection, quality control, testing, and maintenance.
\n\tInspect plant and machinery to ensure optimum performance.
\n\tDirect the maintenance of plant buildings, utilities, and equipment.
\n\tSchedule and plan engineering activities to meet operational needs.
\n\tPlan, design, and oversee development, installation, operation, and maintenance of plant machinery.
\n\tConduct research to solve practical engineering challenges and improve efficiency.
\n\tEstablish and maintain work control systems.
\n\tProvide guidance to plant personnel on proper plant procedures and manufacturing methods.
\n\tGuide preventative and repair maintenance to ensure the plant meets output quotas and deadlines.
\n\tConduct operational tests to verify that engineering designs meet required specifications.
\n\tDesign and improve engineering processes to increase production efficiency and quality.
\n\tPerform project management tasks and oversee execution of engineering projects within area of expertise.
\n\tCoordinate equipment selection, engage contractors, and evaluate quotes in line with procurement policies.
\n\tSupport the business to ensure operations meet environmental and safety protocols cost effectively.
\n\tPrepare and manage departmental budgets, ensuring planned cost outcomes are achieved.
\n\tEnsure monthly reporting on engineering costs and performance through process evaluation.
\n\tDevelop and implement a maintenance philosophy aligned to plant requirements.
\n\tEnsure all engineering activities comply with OHS Act requirements.
\n\tImplement long-term training and development plans for engineering teams.
\n\tImplement and control standard plant KPIs and develop strategies to achieve them.<\/p>\n

\tAchieve \u2265 95% plant uptime annually
\n\tReduce unplanned downtime by at least 10% year-on-year
\n\tImprove Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) by \u2265 5% per quarter<\/p>\n
Maintenance Efficiency<\/p>\n
\tComplete \u2265 90% of planned maintenance tasks within schedule.
\n\tReduce maintenance backlog to \u2264 2 weeks.
\n\tEnsure 100% compliance with preventive maintenance schedules<\/p>\n
Cost Management<\/p>\n
\tMaintain engineering and maintenance spend within \u00b15% of approved budget
\n\tReduce maintenance cost per unit produced by 3\u20135% annually
\n\tDeliver capital projects within budget and approved scope<\/p>\n
Project Delivery<\/p>\n
\tComplete 100% of engineering projects within agreed timelines
\n\tEnsure successful commissioning of new equipment with \u2264 2% defects in first month of operation
\n\tAchieve 100% handover documentation for all capital projects.<\/p>\n
Safety, Health & Compliance<\/p>\n
\tMaintain zero major OHS Act violations
\n\tAchieve 100% completion of statutory inspections (GMR2, boilers, LOTO, pressure vessels).
\n\tEnsure 100% audit compliance for Food Safety & GMP requirements.
\n\tReduce safety incidents within engineering by \u2265 20% year-on-year<\/p>\n
Quality & Food Safety<\/p>\n
\tEnsure engineering-related quality deviations do not exceed 1% of total non-conformances
\n\tEfficiency & Continuous Improvement
\n\tDeliver at least 3 efficiency or cost-saving projects per year
\n\tImprove energy efficiency by \u2265 5% annually (steam, refrigeration, electricity).
\n\tAchieve \u2265 98% availability of critical plant services (steam, refrigeration, compressed air, water).<\/p>\n
People Development & Leadership<\/p>\n
\tEnsure 100% completion of training plans for engineering staff
\n\tReduce engineering staff turnover to below 5%
\n\tConduct quarterly performance reviews with all direct reports
\n\tDevelop and implement succession plans for all critical technical roles<\/p>\n
Reporting & Governance<\/p>\n
\tSubmit monthly engineering reports by the required deadline with 100% accuracy
\n\tMaintain updated engineering SOPs, risk assessments and work instructions at 100% compliance
\n\tEnsure 100% adherence to procurement and contractor management standards.
\n\tEnvironmental Stewardship
\n\tReduce plant environmental incidents to zero major incidents per year
\n\tAchieve \u2265 95% compliance with environmental monitoring requirements (effluent, emissions, waste)
\n\tImplement at least one sustainability improvement initiative per year<\/p>\n
Skills and Education:<\/p>\n
\tBachelor\u2019s degree in mechanical or electrical (Heavy Current) Engineering.
\n\tGovernment Certificate of Competency (GCC) \u2013 Factories.<\/p>\n
Experience<\/p>\n
\t8\u201310 years\u2019 experience in a continuous process operation (factory\/packaging\/perishables manufacturing preferred)
\n\tMinimum 5 years\u2019 practical experience in engineering operations, maintenance, and projects
\n\tProven leadership and people management experience
\n\tDemonstrated successful, hands-on track record in machinery maintenance within a production environment
\n\tExperience engaging staff within established company policies to meet workload demands
\n\tExperience implementing and ensuring compliance with OHS Act requirements<\/p>\n
Skills & Competencies<\/p>\n
\tStrong knowledge of contract negotiation and management
\n\tComprehensive understanding of OHS Act regulations, facilities management, financial oversight, project management, and engineering procurement
\n\tStrong preventative maintenance knowledge and application
\n\tHigh-level problem-solving skills
\n\tIndustrial relations competency is essential
\n\tAbility to lead, motivate, and develop teams<\/p>\n
Advantageous<\/p>\n
\tExperience in the FMCG industry, preferably in an HACCP \/ Food Safety environment
\n\tExperience in another fast-moving consumer goods environment with a strong maintenance leadership track record will also be considered<\/p>\n
