PURPOSE<\/p>\n
\tThe South African payments industry is transitioning from batch to real-time processing. This shift requires new technical capabilities and people who can design AND deliver technical solutions not just draw diagrams.
\n\tThe Head of Technology Solutions is a newly created role that unifies Architecture, Modernisation, and Technical Delivery capability under single leadership. This role owns the BUILD pillar of the CIO Division ensuring PayInc has both the technical design capability and delivery muscle to develop new payment products and modernise existing systems.
\n\tThis role focuses on technical solutioning architecture, system design, and build. It works in close partnership with Business teams who own requirements, business analysis, and process design. Neither function works in isolation. Business defines the ‘what’ and ‘why’; Technology Solutions designs the ‘how’ and delivers it. Success requires strong collaboration, not territorial ownership.
\n\tThis role requires an individual who thinks strategically, designs pragmatically, engages stakeholders effectively, and ensures solutions ship. The focus is on outcomes payment capabilities that work.<\/p>\n

Your key responsibilities include:<\/p>\n
\tTechnical Solution Architecture & Design
\n\tProvide technology vision and direction for PayInc\u2019s payments platform evolution
\n\tDefine and own the technical architecture for payment systems (real-time and batch)
\n\tLead technical solution design for new payment products and capabilities
\n\tWork with Business teams to translate requirements into technical solutions
\n\tEnsure architecture supports real-time, high-availability, and sovereign readiness requirements
\n\tEvaluate and recommend technology approaches (build vs buy, cloud vs on premises)
\n\tMaintain technology roadmap aligned with business strategy
\n\tChair technical design authority and architecture governance
\n\tStakeholder & Industry Engagement
\n\tAct as subject matter expert in payments technology and real-time capabilities
\n\tLead Technical Authority sessions with participating banks
\n\tRepresent PayInc in industry technical working groups and industry forums
\n\tWork with banks and stakeholders to understand technical requirements and constraints
\n\tSupport SARB engagement on technical aspects of regulatory requirements
\n\tEnsure stakeholder engagement is collaborative and builds industry confidence
\n\tTechnical Delivery & Modernisation
\n\tDrive the development of real-time payments clearing and settlement capabilities
\n\tLead modernisation of legacy batch systems to modern technology stack
\n\tEnsure solutions are delivered on time, on budget, and to quality standards
\n\tEstablish solution delivery practices, standards, and quality gates
\n\tManage the transition from design to build to run
\n\tPlatform & Integration
\n\tDrive API-first and integration-ready architecture
\n\tEnsure platform portability and sovereign readiness
\n\tCollaborate with Platform Enablement on infrastructure requirements
\n\tDefine integration patterns and standards for participant connectivity
\n\tLeadership & Team Development
\n\tBuild and lead a high-performing solutions team
\n\tDevelop a manager layer to create succession depth
\n\tBuild real-time payments and modern architecture skills across the team
\n\tFoster a culture of solution thinking, quality, and continuous improvement
\n\tCollaborate effectively with RUN teams to ensure smooth handovers
\n\tIdentify trends and opportunities; communicate and escalate as required<\/p>\n
QUALIFICATIONS\/KNOWLEDGE
\nEssential<\/p>\n
\tDegree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or related field
\n\tDeep understanding of payments systems architecture (real-time and batch)
\n\tStrong solution design and architecture capability
\n\tUnderstanding of integration patterns (API, messaging, events)
\n\tKnowledge of cloud platforms and modern architecture patterns
\n\tSuperior communication and presentation skills
\n\tAbility to translate business requirements into technical solutions
\n\tAbility to communicate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences<\/p>\n
Preferred<\/p>\n
\tPost-graduate qualification or MBA
\n\tTOGAF or equivalent architecture certification
\n\tCloud architecture certifications
\n\tKnowledge of ISO 20022 and payment messaging standards
\n\tExperience with South African payments ecosystem<\/p>\n
EXPERIENCE
\nEssential<\/p>\n
\t15+ years in technology roles with progressive responsibility
\n\t8+ years in senior technical leadership could be solution architecture, technical delivery, engineering leadership, or technical programme management
\n\tTrack record of SHIPPING complex solutions in regulated environments, not just designing them
\n\tProven experience in payments, banking, or financial services
\n\tExperience leading and developing high-performing technical teams
\n\tExperience engaging with senior stakeholders and industry bodies
\n\tComfortable being accountable for delivery outcomes and deadlines<\/p>\n

\tExperience with real-time payment systems
\n\tExperience with FMI \/ market infrastructure environments
