\n\tThe primary purpose of this position is to take accountability for the overall strategic, commercial, underwriting, and distribution performance of the Heavy Haulage business.
\n\tThe role carries end-to-end responsibility for sustainable growth, underwriting profitability, governance, people leadership, and market positioning, in alignment with Santam\u2019s strategy, brand promise, and Treating Customers Fairly principles.
\n\tThe role integrates business leadership, underwriting excellence, and sales & distribution oversight to ensure balanced growth, strong technical outcomes, and long-term commercial sustainability within the Heavy Haulage portfolio.<\/p>\n
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES<\/p>\n
Strategic & Business Leadership<\/p>\n
\tDefine and execute the Heavy Haulage business strategy, aligned to Santam and Santam Specialist Solutions objectives.
\n\tSet long-term strategic direction to drive sustainable growth, profitability, and market leadership.
\n\tAssess market, client, regulatory, and competitive trends to identify risks and growth opportunities.
\n\tRepresent Santam as a senior leader in relevant industry, broker, and stakeholder forums.
\n\tPromote and embed Santam\u2019s values and brand promise internally and externally.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Financial & Commercial Stewardship<\/p>\n
\tOwn top-line growth, underwriting performance, and profitability of the Heavy Haulage portfolio.
\n\tPrepare, manage, and deliver against the approved budget, ensuring strong expense discipline.
\n\tPartner with actuarial teams to ensure competitive, data-driven pricing aligned to loss ratio targets.
\n\tMonitor portfolio performance, claims trends, and risk metrics, taking corrective action where required.
\n\tEnsure disciplined premium collection, debtor management, and cancellation reserve controls.<\/p>\n
Underwriting Strategy & Technical Governance<\/p>\n
\tAccountable for underwriting strategy, risk appetite, and governance within Heavy Haulage.
\n\tEnsure compliance with underwriting mandates, authorities, and Santam\u2019s Underwriting Practice Policy.
\n\tProvide guidance and sign-off on complex, high-value, or non-standard risks and wordings.
\n\tDrive consistency, quality, and best-practice underwriting disciplines to minimise operational and financial risk.
\n\tLead research and development of products, risk solutions, and technical enhancements.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Sales, Distribution & Market Development<\/p>\n
\tDefine and own the Heavy Haulage sales and distribution strategy in partnership with Sales, Underwriting, and Operations.
\n\tDrive revenue growth, portfolio expansion, and market penetration through effective broker and client engagement.
\n\tBuild strong, long-term relationships with key brokers, clients, reinsurers, and strategic partners.
\n\tAct as senior escalation point for complex commercial, broker, or client matters impacting revenue or reputation.
\n\tOversee national and regional marketing initiatives, ensuring return on investment and alignment to strategy.<\/p>\n
Client & Stakeholder Engagement<\/p>\n
\tMaintain strong internal partnerships across Underwriting, Claims, Sales, Actuarial, Legal, Risk, Compliance, and Operations.
\n\tEnsure delivery of a differentiated, high-quality client and broker experience
\n\tSupport cross-selling opportunities across Santam and group businesses.<\/p>\n
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES<\/p>\n
Governance, Risk & Compliance<\/p>\n
\tEnsure adherence to regulatory, statutory, and internal governance requirements, including FAIS and insurance legislation.
\n\tAct as custodian of underwriting binders, outsourcing arrangements, and delegated authorities where applicable.
\n\tOversee internal and external audits, ensuring timely remediation of findings.
\n\tImplement robust risk management and internal control frameworks across the Heavy Haulage business.<\/p>\n
Data, Insight & Reporting<\/p>\n
\tLeverage data analytics and management information to drive insight-led decision-making.
\n\tMonitor dashboards and performance reporting to track growth, underwriting performance, and operational effectiveness.
\n\tProvide regular reporting to management and governance forums<\/p>\n
\u00a0People Leadership & Talent Development<\/p>\n
\tLead, coach, and develop a high-performing leadership and specialist team.
\n\tCreate a culture of accountability, collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement.
\n\tDrive engagement, capability building, and succession planning within the business.
\n\tIdentify and mentor future leaders to ensure long-term sustainability of the function.<\/p>\n
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE<\/p>\n
\tRelevant Bachelor\u2019s degree (Commercial, Insurance, Risk, Finance or related).
\n\tFAIS compliant.
\n\tMinimum of 10 years\u2019 experience in the insurance industry.
\n\tAt least 5\u20137 years\u2019 experience at senior leadership level.
\n\tProven track record in leading a specialist insurance portfolio or business.
\n\tStrong experience across underwriting, risk management, sales\/distribution, and financial management.<\/p>\n
