Role Summary<\/p>\n
\tThis senior role drives secure, automated, and compliant cloud-native delivery while managing monitoring\/alerting, penetration testing programs, vulnerability management, and broader cybersecurity initiatives.
\n\tYou will lead a team of DevSecOps engineers, foster a security by design culture, and enable the business to innovate rapidly in a regulated South African and global context<\/p>\n
Key Responsibilities<\/p>\n
DevOps<\/p>\n
\tProvision and manage cloud infrastructure as code (Terraform, Ansible, CloudFormation) on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
\n\tImplement containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes, Helm) for consistent environments.
\n\tAutomate repetitive tasks, reduce toil, and improve developer experience through self service tools
\n\tCollaborate with software developers, QA, and security teams to embed DevOps practices (shift-left security, automated testing).
\n\tPerform root-cause analysis on production issues, implement fixes, and drive continuous improvement.
\n\tParticipate in on-call rotations and incident response.<\/p>\n
Leadership & Team Management<\/p>\n
\tLead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of DevOps, SRE, and security engineers.
\n\tMentor junior engineers and promote a culture of automation and shared ownership
\n\tChampion DevSecOps practices and culture across Development, Operations, Security, and Compliance teams.
\n\tDefine and track KPIs: vulnerability remediation time, security gate pass rate, MTTR, deployment frequency, and alert reduction.<\/p>\n
AWS Cloud Environment Management & Security<\/p>\n
\tDesign, implement, and govern secure AWS architectures (multi-account landing zones via Control Tower, VPCs, EKS, Lambda, RDS, etc.) using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, CDK).
\n\tEnforce least-privilege IAM, encryption (KMS), secrets management, network security, and data sovereignty for POPIA compliance.
\n\tLeverage AWS-native services: Amazon Inspector, GuardDuty, Security Hub, Config, IAM Access Analyzer, and AWS Security Agent for automated security.
\n\tBuild and Secure CI\/CD Pipelines & Automation
\n\tBuild and evolve secure CI\/CD pipelines (AWS CodePipeline, GitLab), optimizing workflows to automate testing, builds, and deployments with security gates (SAST,
\n\tDAST, SCA, IaC, secret, and container scanning)<\/p>\n
Monitoring, Alerting & Observability<\/p>\n
\tArchitect comprehensive monitoring and alerting using AWS CloudWatch, GuardDuty, X-Ray, EventBridge, and SIEM integrations.
\n\tDesign intelligent alerting with automated routing, escalation, noise reduction, and rapid incident response processes (critical for Cybercrimes Act obligations).
\n\tSet up monitoring, logging, and alerting to maintain high availability and performance.
\n\tEnsure 24\/7 visibility into security posture, performance, and compliance.<\/p>\n
Cybersecurity, Penetration Testing & Risk Management<\/p>\n
\tLead and coordinate regular penetration testing
\n\tOversee vulnerability management: scanning, risk-based prioritization, remediation tracking, and exception processes.
\n\tConduct threat modelling, runtime protection, supply-chain security, zero-trust implementation, and incident response.
\n\tEnsure appropriate, reasonable technical and organisational measures for POPIA Condition 7 (Security Safeguards), including encryption, access controls, logging, and regular testing.<\/p>\n
Compliance, Governance & Continuous Improvement<\/p>\n
\tSupport audits and evidence collection
\n\tCollaborate on release management with security go\/no-go decisions.
\n\tStay current with AWS security updates, emerging threats, and South African regulatory changes.
\n\tDrive maturity of DevSecOps practices and conduct regular AWS Well-Architected
\n\tFramework reviews (Security Pillar).<\/p>\n
Qualifications & Experience<\/p>\n
\tEducation: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Engineering<\/p>\n
Experience<\/p>\n
\t8\u201310+ years in DevOps, Cloud Engineering, or Cybersecurity.
\n\t3\u20135+ years in technical leadership or management roles.
\n\tStrong hands-on AWS experience
\n\tProven track record in regulated environments with POPIA\/GDPR compliance.<\/p>\n
Certifications<\/p>\n
\tAWS Certified Security \u2013 Specialty or AWS Certified DevOps Engineer \u2013 Professional.
\n\tCISSP, CISM, CCSP, or CISA.<\/p>\n
Essential Skills & Competencies<\/p>\n
Technical:<\/p>\n
\tDeep expertise in AWS.
\n\tProficiency with security tools (Inspector, GuardDuty, SAST\/DAST like SonarQube, SIEM).
\n\tProficiency in at least one scripting language (Python, Bash, PowerShell).
\n\tStrong experience with Linux, networking, and Git.
\n\tHands-on expertise with CI\/CD, IaC, Docker\/Kubernetes, and at least one major
\n\tcloud platform (AWS\/Azure\/GCP certifications preferred).
\n\tPenetration testing methodologies and vulnerability management.
\n\tKnowledge of monitoring, observability, and infrastructure security.<\/p>\n
