\tWe are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Customs Manager to join Unitrans Freight Forwarding & Clearing team. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring full compliance with the Customs & Excise Act, leading the customs team, and safeguarding our clients\u2019 interests in all customs-related matters. This includes interpreting legislation, managing risk, ensuring accurate declarations, representing the company in disputes with SARS, and engaging with authorities at senior levels.
\n\tThis is a key leadership role requiring technical expertise, strong decision-making ability, and the capability to deliver efficient, compliant, and value-adding customs solutions to our clients.<\/p>\n
Minimum Requirements\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
\tMinimum qualification: Relevant 4-year Degree (NQF Level 7) in Customs, International Trade, Logistics, or related field.
\n\tProfessional accreditation: Customs Practitioner\/Accreditation (e.g., SARS RLA registration, SAFFCA\/SAFFA membership) preferred.
\n\tExperience: Minimum 5 years in a senior customs role within Freight Forwarding & Clearing.<\/p>\n
Strong knowledge of:<\/p>\n
\tCustoms & Excise Act, HS Tariff Classification, Rules of Origin
\n\tVAT, Duties, and Rebate structures
\n\tBond stores, Removals in Bond (RIB\/RIT), and Refunds\/Provisional Payments
\n\tSystems experience: Proficiency in ShipShape or similar clearing software
\n\tStrong leadership, client-facing, and problem-solving skills.<\/p>\n
Duties & Responsibilities\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n
Leadership & Cost Control<\/p>\n
\tLead the national customs team and ensure adherence to all processes and procedures.
\n\tManage customs deferments across branches.
\n\tProvide forecasts, statistics, and reporting to Finance and Management.<\/p>\n
Tariff Classification & Entries<\/p>\n
\tReview client documentation for accuracy and completeness.
\n\tDetermine correct tariff headings and duty structures using product knowledge, literature, and HS codes.
\n\tPrepare and submit Bills of Entry, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
\n\tStay updated with tariff amendments, customs rulings, and regulatory changes.<\/p>\n
Financial Compliance & Refunds<\/p>\n
\tManage applications for refunds, provisional payments, and rebates.
\n\tEnsure timeous processing of refunds and accurate bond store reconciliations.
\n\tMaintain up-to-date permits, licenses, and compliance records.<\/p>\n
SARS Liaison & Dispute Management<\/p>\n
\tHandle customs queries, audits, and disputes with SARS.
\n\tRepresent the company in stakeholder engagements, industry forums, and government consultations.
\n\tProvide ongoing training and updates to management and clients regarding customs changes.<\/p>\n
Removals in Bond (RIB\/RIT)<\/p>\n
\tPrepare and monitor RIB\/RIT shipments until acquittal.
\n\tSubmit acquittals within statutory deadlines and update SARS systems accordingly.
\n\tMaintain accurate registers and compliance records.<\/p>\n
Systems, Reporting & Client Engagement<\/p>\n
\tMonitor ShipShape (or equivalent) for stops, releases, and compliance alerts.
\n\tConduct client visits, audits, and offer value-add advisory services.
\n\tSubmit departmental reports by the 5th of each month.
\n\tEnsure ongoing client satisfaction by providing clear, compliant, and cost-effective solutions.<\/p>\n
