Organizational Background
\nA Chance for Change Foundation is a Zambian non-profit organization committed to poverty reduction and economic empowerment through sustainable agriculture, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Our agricultural programs, including the African Bird\u2019s Eye Chili Out-Grower Scheme and other horticultural projects, aim to equip smallholder farmers with skills, resources, and market access to improve their livelihoods.
\nRole Summary
\nThe Agronomist will support smallholder farmers across various agricultural initiatives implemented by A Chance for Change Foundation, including but not limited to the African Bird\u2019s Eye Chili Out-Grower Scheme. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise in sustainable crop production, conduct field-level training, support input use and management, and monitor agronomic practices to ensure productivity and quality across all targeted crops. The role demands extensive fieldwork, strong stakeholder engagement, and close collaboration with farmers, cooperatives, and project teams.
\nKey Responsibilities
\n1. Technical Support Across Agricultural Projects<\/p>\n
Provide agronomic expertise not only in chili production but also in other crops supported by A Chance for Change Foundation, such as garlic, ginger, onions, cabbages, tomatoes, and broiler chickens.
\nEnsure good agricultural practices (GAP) are applied consistently across all project crops.
\nSupport the introduction and scaling of new crops or innovations based on evolving program needs.<\/p>\n
2. Farmer Training & Capacity Building<\/p>\n
Develop and deliver training modules on soil preparation, crop management, irrigation, pest and disease control, and post-harvest handling for multiple crops.
\nConduct field demonstrations to promote sustainable farming practices.
\nMentor farmers and local extension agents across all supported agricultural initiatives.<\/p>\n
3. Field Monitoring & Advisory Services<\/p>\n
Conduct regular field visits to assess crop performance, identify issues, and recommend appropriate agronomic interventions.
\nSupport seasonal planning and help farmers align their practices with project expectations and local agro-ecological conditions.
\nMonitor compliance with agronomic protocols and quality standards.<\/p>\n
4. Input Distribution & Use<\/p>\n
Facilitate the distribution and proper use of seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs across all crops.
\nProvide guidance to maximize input efficiency and improve yield outcomes while promoting soil health.<\/p>\n
5. Data Collection, Reporting & Documentation<\/p>\n
Collect and maintain accurate records on farmer participation, crop performance, input usage, and training outcomes.
\nPrepare and submit regular technical and field reports to A Chance for Change Foundation management.
\nSupport the documentation of case studies, farmer success stories, and best practices.<\/p>\n
6. Post-Harvest and Market Readiness Support<\/p>\n
Train farmers on harvest timing, post-harvest handling, drying, grading, and packaging for various crops.
\nCollaborate with marketing and logistics teams to coordinate produce aggregation and transport to market points.<\/p>\n
7. Stakeholder Collaboration<\/p>\n
Work closely with community leaders, local agricultural offices, cooperatives, and other stakeholders to coordinate and strengthen program delivery.
\nRepresent A Chance for Change Foundation in relevant local agricultural platforms, forums, and technical working groups.<\/p>\n
8. Additional Duties<\/p>\n
Perform any other related duties as may be reasonably assigned by the supervisor in line with the evolving needs of A Chance for Change Foundation\u2019s agricultural programs.<\/p>\n
Qualifications and Experience<\/p>\n
Bachelor\u2019s degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Science, Crop Science, or a related field.
\nAt least 3 years of hands-on experience working with smallholder farmers, preferably across multiple crops.
\nStrong background in training, extension work, and community-based agricultural programming.
\nFamiliarity with sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices.
\nExcellent communication skills in English and a local language (Bemba preferred).
\nProven skills in field data collection, analysis, and reporting.
\nWillingness to travel extensively within Luapula Province.
\nA valid motorbike or driver\u2019s license will be an added advantage.<\/p>\n
