{"id":4161,"date":"2025-07-02T18:02:08","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T18:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jobs.dataaxisnode.com\/zambia\/job\/agronomist-at-conservation-lower-zambezi\/"},"modified":"2025-10-25T00:14:31","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T00:14:31","slug":"agronomist-at-conservation-lower-zambezi","status":"expired","type":"job_listing","link":"https:\/\/jobs.dataaxisnode.com\/zambia\/?post_type=job_listing&p=4161","title":{"rendered":"Agronomist at Conservation Lower Zambezi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Terms of Reference for Agronomist Position<br \/>\nPosition: Agronomist<br \/>\nLocation: Chirundu, Zambia<br \/>\nEmployer: Conservation Lower Zambezi<br \/>\nObjectives: The Agronomist will play a crucial role in the successful development and execution<br \/>\nof all agronomic activities of a new five-year-project implemented by Conservation Lower<br \/>\nZambezi: the \u201eClimate Village Lab\u201c (CVL).<br \/>\nThe CVL supports three villages to enhance livelihoods, mitigate Human-Wildlife-Conflict and reduce greenhouse gas emissions which are mainly caused by charcoal production. Its main activities compromise:<\/p>\n<p>Improving existing communal agricultural areas through wildlife fencing, drip irrigation and conservation farming practices<br \/>\nEstablishment of fenced and irrigated agroforestry plots for cash crops (fruit trees)<br \/>\nIntroducing assisted natural regeneration (ANR) areas, protected against wildlife damage<br \/>\nIntroducing forest conservation measures<br \/>\nElectrifying households<\/p>\n<p>A key goal is to increase the productivity of existing agricultural areas by more than 50% and to provide additional income through cash crops to provide an alternative source of income to charcoal production. Costs and benefits will be closely monitored. This non-profit project aims to serve as a model for future replication. The CVL also presents an opportunity to develop and pilot a biodiversity crediting mechanism.<br \/>\nKey Responsibilities:<br \/>\nPlanning and Implementation<\/p>\n<p>Develop detailed action plans for the improvement of existing agricultural land and the establishment of agroforestry<br \/>\nOutline the timeline of key activities<br \/>\nOversee the implementation of fencing, irrigation and agroforestry in collaboration with the local farmers<\/p>\n<p>Community Engagement:<\/p>\n<p>Help CLZ\u2018s project manager to identify and hire a \u201eLocal Resource Person\u201c (extension worker) in each village to assist in communication, implementation and monitoring<br \/>\nHold sensitization meetings with the main local stakeholders to collaboratively discuss and plan activities<\/p>\n<p>Agroforestry Development:<\/p>\n<p>Guide the establishment and management of agroforestry areas with fruit trees and cash crops<br \/>\nCollaborate with local farmers to select appropriate tree species and cultivation methods<br \/>\nIntroduce farmers to basic techniques of intercropping and pruning<\/p>\n<p>Monitoring and Evaluation:<\/p>\n<p>Conduct regular monitoring of agricultural areas and agroforestry sites to assess growth and productivity.<br \/>\nTrack yield development and provide feedback for continuous improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Team Leadership:<\/p>\n<p>Train, and supervise a local staY member (\u201eLocal Resource Person\u201c) in each village to assist with project implementation and community engagement.<br \/>\nFoster a collaborative and inclusive working environment.<\/p>\n<p>Required Qualifications and Skills:<\/p>\n<p>Bachelor\u2019s degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Science, or a related field<br \/>\nA minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in agriculture and working with smallholders, preferably under climatic conditions similar to those in Chiawa<br \/>\nExperience in management of small irrigation schemes<br \/>\nExperience in working in areas with human-wildlife conflicts<br \/>\nExperience in collaborating with stakeholders such as Community Resources Board, Department of National Parks and Wildlife and Ministry of Agriculture<br \/>\nProficiency in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for land assessment and planning<br \/>\nStrong knowledge of agroforestry practices<br \/>\nKeen interest in sustainability, water management and conservation farming<br \/>\nPractical knowlodge of methods for producing organic fertilizer<br \/>\nFamiliarity with Climate Smart Agriculture and Conservation Farming techniques<br \/>\nValid driver\u2019s license<br \/>\nBudgeting of activities and record keeping<br \/>\nKnowledge of local language (Goba) is of advantage<br \/>\nExcellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage eYectively with local communities<br \/>\nEqual treatment of women and socially disadvantaged families is a matter of course<br \/>\nFar above-average commitment and ability to work independently, flexibility and creativity<br \/>\nSensitive and knowageable to human rights<\/p>\n<p>Reporting: The Agronomist will report to the Project Manager and will work closely with other project team members and stakeholders. He will document the progress of implementation with photos and video clips.<br \/>\nWork Environment: The Agronomist will be based in Chirundu, sharing an office with other staff from CLZ. It is expected that he\/she spends most days in the field. A car will be provided for work related duties.<br \/>\nDuration: three-month probation period applies.<br \/>\nThe contract is for two years, which can be mutually extended by both parties.<br \/>\nSharing is Caring!
