\nPurpose of the Role
\nThe Construction Project Manager will lead and oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of the Tongabezi Trust School\u2019s construction projects (Secondary school, Multi-purpose Hall, Sports Arena etc) in Simoonga Village, Livingstone of Zambia, situated on cotton soil. The role requires a strong focus on sustainable and eco-friendly building practices, particularly for key facilities such as kitchens, toilets, and classrooms. The Project Manager will be responsible for coordinating all phases of the projects, ensuring compliance with Zambian construction regulations, and delivering high-quality infrastructure within budget and timeline.
\nKey Responsibilities
\nProject Planning and Design<\/p>\n
Lead the development of architectural drawings and technical specifications in collaboration with consultants and design teams.
\nPrepare and review Bills of Quantities (BoQs) to ensure accuracy and cost-effectiveness.
\nEnsure designs incorporate eco-friendly and locally appropriate building techniques and materials.<\/p>\n
Procurement and Contractor Oversight<\/p>\n
Manage the tendering and procurement process in line with Zambian public procurement guidelines.
\nConduct due diligence on all contracted firms and suppliers.
\nEnsure that the projects terms of references are well outlined and contracts are in line with the laws of Zambia.
\nMaintain direct oversight of all contractors and subcontractors, ensuring adherence to contractual obligations.<\/p>\n
Construction Supervision and Quality Assurance<\/p>\n
Monitor daily site activities and ensure compliance with approved drawings, specifications, and safety standards.
\nTrack project progress against timelines and milestones, providing regular updates to the CEO.
\nSet and enforce deadlines, holding contractors accountable for delays or deviations.
\nEnsure quality control and conduct inspections at key stages of construction.<\/p>\n
Environmental and Soil Considerations<\/p>\n
Implement construction strategies suitable for cotton soil conditions, including proper foundation design and drainage.
\nPromote and integrate sustainable building solutions such as composting toilets, solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and low-carbon materials.<\/p>\n
Stakeholder Engagement and Reporting<\/p>\n
Liaise with local authorities, community leaders, and government agencies to ensure alignment with national education and infrastructure standards.
\nPrepare and submit detailed progress reports, risk assessments, and budget updates to the CEO and Board.
\nFacilitate site visits and stakeholder meetings as required.<\/p>\n
Qualifications and Experience
\nEssential<\/p>\n
Bachelor\u2019s Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or a related field.
\nMinimum of 5 years\u2019 experience managing construction projects, preferably in rural or low-resource settings.
\nProven experience working with cotton soil or similar challenging terrains.
\nStrong knowledge of Zambian construction codes, environmental regulations, and building standards.
\nDemonstrated ability to manage multiple contractors and coordinate complex project timelines.
\nProficiency in project management tools and software (e.g., MS Project, AutoCAD, Excel).<\/p>\n
Desirable<\/p>\n
Postgraduate qualification in Sustainable Construction or Environmental Engineering.
\nMembership with the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) or Zambia Institute of Architects (ZIA).
\nExperience in educational infrastructure development.
\nFamiliarity with donor-funded or NGO-led construction projects.<\/p>\n
