In order to bring long term change to the legal and prison system in favour of children in line with their fundamental human rights, we advocate for enhanced policies, conditions, and legal frameworks.<br \/>\nWe currently have the following internship positions available to be filled:<\/p>\n<p>1. Job Title:\u00a0Legal InternLocation:\u00a0Chipata, Eastern ProvinceDuration:\u00a08 months<br \/>\nPosition Summary<br \/>\nThe Legal Intern provides essential legal and logistical support to UP Zambia\u2019s work in correctional facilities and courts, with a focus on mobile court operations, provision of legal advice to clients, and effective case management. The role involves direct interaction with clients, families, stakeholders and court personnel, and contributes to the smooth running of legal services and activities implemented under the project.<br \/>\nKey Responsibilities<br \/>\n\u2022 Prepare and set up mobile courtrooms within correctional facilities, including arrangement of furniture, technology, and legal materials.\u2022 Ensure all equipment, documents, and materials required for court proceedings are in good working order and available on time.\u2022 Coordinate with correctional facility staff to facilitate the secure and efficient conduct of mobile court sessions.\u2022 Manage logistics and refreshments for court personnel and participants, maintaining adequate stock levels and responding promptly to emerging needs.\u2022 Provide supervised legal advice and support to clients at Katete and Chipata Correctional Facilities.\u2022 Draft and revise legal documents and case materials under the guidance of the supervising legal officer.\u2022 Maintain accurate, updated client case files both physically and through the case management system.\u2022 Conduct legal research on relevant laws and issues affecting client cases.\u2022 Liaise with clients\u2019 family members, relevant authorities, and partner institutions as required.\u2022 Participate in or conduct stakeholder engagements, legal trainings, and UP Zambia events.\u2022 Prepare and submit weekly progress reports and other documentation as requested by your line manager.\u2022 Perform other duties as may be assigned within the scope of the role.<\/p>\n<p>2. The role involves direct interaction with clients, families, stakeholders and court personnel, and contributes to the smooth running of legal services and activities implemented under the project.<br \/>\nKey Responsibilities<br \/>\n\u2022 Provide legal advice on human rights, criminal procedure, diversion, police bond\/bail to detained children.\u2022 Facilitate diversion processes for children in police stations\/posts.\u2022 Attend court sessions to support clients pre-appearance.\u2022 Visit UP Zambia legal desk and correctional facilities to advise clients.\u2022 Organize legal files, evidence, and case materials.\u2022 Prepare case files and track progress.\u2022 Conduct legal research relevant to assigned cases.\u2022 Draft legal documents and update physical\/online case management systems.\u2022 Report pending court dates to supervisor.\u2022 Assist with parent tracing and defence witness engagement.\u2022 Prepare clients for legal proceedings and interviews.\u2022 Facilitate client-legal team communication.\u2022 Support report preparation.\u2022 Perform other duties as may be assigned within the scope of the role.<\/p>\n<p>Key Requirements &amp; Attributes<br \/>\n\u2022 Undergraduate degree in law from a recognised institution preferred. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.\u2022 Strong research and report writing skills.\u2022 Excellent listening and analytical skills.\u2022 Strong understanding of legal principles and terminology.\u2022 Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).\u2022 Good verbal and written communication skills.\u2022 Able to work under limited supervision.\u2022 Strong commitment to social justice.<br \/>\nSharing is Caring!
