PURPOSE OF POSITION
To deliver specialized, age‑appropriate critical care to patients with life‑threatening conditions, ensuring safe, ethical, and effective practice in line with South African Nursing Council (SANC) regulations. The role centres on stabilizing critically ill patients, coordinating multidisciplinary care, and safeguarding patient dignity and recovery in a high‑acuity environment.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Specialized Critical Care: Provide expert nursing care to critically ill patients in the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU).
Patient Assessment & Management: Continuously assess, monitor, and manage patients with complex medical conditions such as acute respiratory failure, multi-organ dysfunction, and severe infections.
Medication & Treatment Administration: Safely administer prescribed medications and therapeutic interventions, ensuring strict compliance with SANC regulations.
Clinical Monitoring: Track vital signs, laboratory results, and other critical parameters, responding promptly to changes in patient status.
Life-Support Equipment Management: Operate and assist in the management of advanced life-support systems, including ventilators, dialysis machines, and intravenous infusion pumps.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with the healthcare team to design and implement individualized care plans. Offer emotional support to patients and their families during critical care episodes.
Documentation: Maintain comprehensive and accurate patient records, capturing all aspects of care delivery.
Infection Control & Safety: Uphold hospital protocols and infection prevention measures to ensure a safe, hygienic, and compliant care environment.
COMPETENCIES (The following will be advantageous)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
(Educational Qualifications & Experience)
Registered with South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Registered Nurse.
Preferably have 2 or more years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
ICU experience or ICU Nursing qualification are essential.
Minimum 1-2 years clinical experience in an ICU setting.
Competence in patient assessment, clinical decision making and emergency intervention.
Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced environment.
Willingness to work day and night shifts, including weekends and public holidays and adapt to working in other areas of the hospital when needed.
