  • Global Health Corps Physician

    Job Description
    Texas Children’s Global Health Network is recruiting a full-time pediatric faculty member to serve as a Global Health Corps physician supporting pediatric acute care at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi. This position will provide support to PACHIMAKE, a Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) consortium comprised of Baylor Foundation-Malawi, Texas Children’s Hospital / Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, University of North CarolinaChapel Hill / Project Malawi and the University of Utah.
    Applicants should be Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM), Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM), or General Pediatrics Board-Eligible or -Certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, have specific interest and/or experience working in acute care pediatrics, experience working in an international, resource-limited setting, and excellent interpersonal communication skills. The position will work alongside local pediatricians with a combination of provision and supervision of direct clinical care in high acuity areas of the Pediatrics Wards at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), education of local healthcare workers, clinical supervision and education of Kamuzu University of Health Sciences pediatric residents, clinical supervision and education of visiting trainees fromU.S.-based partners, involvement in research and quality improvement, and administrative responsibilities to strengthen the quality of pediatric inpatient care at KCH.
    Site: Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) is the national referral hospital in the capital city of Lilongwe serving the central region of Malawi. The pediatric department has approximately 300 beds, admits more than 27,000 patients per year, and manages all medical emergencies for the region. There are three main pediatric wards, a nutritional resuscitation unit, a post-natal nursery and a high acuity ward. KCH is overseen by the Ministry of Health and affiliated with the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences.
    Background: The goal for this position is to provide consistent pediatrician presence, striving to improve pediatric outcomes at KCH. Because the majority of pediatric hospital mortality in resource-limited settings occurs early during hospitalization and Malawi has one of the lowest ratios of health care workers per capita, the primary focus is on acute clinical care oversight and teaching. This position will support PACHIMAKE, which aims to improve the care of acutely ill children through sustainable, bi-directional implementation of effective, coordinated, high-quality clinical, educational, quality improvement and research initiatives. The successful candidate will also provide cross-departmental support and coordination for quality improvement, education, and research.
    We are looking for someone with a skillset to support acute care clinical, educational, quality improvement and research initiatives in a global health setting. The interpersonal skills to balance and support relationships between KCH, the Department of Pediatrics at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Baylor Foundation-Malawi, and U.S.-based faculty and trainees are also essential.
    Goals:
    • Access: to improve the outcomes of acutely ill children at KCH
    • Capacity strengthening: to augment the ability of pediatric providers to care for acutely ill children at KCH
    • Partnership: to strengthen coordination and management of PACHIMAKE partnership to provide impactful services at KCH
    • Improved infrastructure: at KCH for the care of acutely ill children
    GHC-KCH Duties and responsibilities
    • PACHIMAKE Program Support: You will work under the leadership of the Head of Department (HOD) at KCH Pediatrics and ideally alongside U.S.-based PACHIMAKE pediatric emergency medicine specialists to provide clinical, educational and research support for the consortium. This includes regular reporting to the HOD and between local staff and U.S.-based leadership as well.
    • Clinical Capacity Strengthening: You will be part of the team of pediatricians whosupervise Malawian pediatric residents (MMed candidates), medical officers, interns and clinical officers on the pediatric wards as well as providing direct patient care and participating in call coverage.
    • Quality Improvement Work: You will nurture a culture of quality improvement (QI)throughout KCH Pediatrics, and support QI education and program development across pediatric subspecialty areas.
    • Medical Trainee Education: As one of the pediatric consultants you will support the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences Masters in Medicine in Pediatrics (MMed) graduate medical education program. You will participate in the education (lectures, bedside teaching and mentorship) of Malawian medical and clinical officers and resident trainees rotating at KCH. You will support curriculum development for the MMed program.
    • Mentorship of rotating trainees and faculty: You will participate in the coordination, clinical supervision, orientation, evaluation, and mentorship of visiting US-basedtrainees and faculty from Baylor College of Medicine (Houston), and other PACHIMAKE Consortium partners (from Cincinnati, Chapel Hill and Salt Lake City), and assist with rotators from other institutions.
    • Coordination: You will support coordination of Texas Children’s Global Health Network activities across pediatric sub-specialty areas within KCH, and supportrelationships between KCH, the Department of Pediatrics at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Baylor Foundation Malawi, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Global Health Network.
    Compensation, Benefits, and Accountabilities: This position is funded through the Texas Children’s Global Health Corps program. You will be employed by Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) as a faculty member and Global Health Corp physician, and will receive a competitive salary plus housing and a comprehensive benefits package. You will receive BCM faculty benefits as well as GHC benefits. In-country, you will report to the Baylor Foundation-Malawi Clinic Director. You will also have reporting accountabilities to the Houston office through PACHIMAKE program leadership and theTexas Children’s Global GHC Director.

    Job description:
    We are looking for a motivated Research Intern to join our biodiversity research team. The successful candidate will support field-based ecological monitoring and data collection across key protected areas in Malawi. They will also be involved with desk-based activities such as report writing, data entry and camera trap analysis.
    This is a unique opportunity for early-career conservationists to gain hands-on experience in wildlife monitoring, contribute to meaningful research, and work alongside a passionate team of researchers. You’ll get involved with a variety of desk-based and fieldwork opportunities, including the post-release monitoring of release animals, and will also support our ongoing biodiversity research project in Liwonde National Park. You’ll develop report writing, data management, and GIS skills.
    This position is based at our office in Lilongwe but there will be a frequent need to travel for fieldwork.
    Essential duties and responsibilities:

    Assist in regular fieldwork activities, including VHF tracking, camera trapping, welfare checks, and data entry
    Support data management and reporting
    Liaise with stakeholders and field partners as needed
    Travel regularly between Lilongwe and various protected areas in Malawi for fieldwork
    Support in volunteer management

    Practical experience in radio tracking, camera trapping, and other data collection techniques

    Requirements:

    Degree in Wildlife Biology, Environmental Science, or related field
