Bahir Dar Specialty Eye Care Center (BDSEC) is a newly constructed tertiary eye care center dedicated to providing specialized and comprehensive eye care services. We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Electrical Engineer to join us. The Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the maintenance, operation, and improvement of all electrical systems including the sanitary, within the center, ensuring a safe, reliable, and efficient power supply for critical medical equipment, lighting, and other essential services. This role requires a proactive individual with strong technical knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and functionality within a healthcare environment.
Responsibilities:
Maintenance and Operations:
Implement and execute a comprehensive preventive maintenance program for all electrical equipment and including sanitary systems, regular inspections, testing, and servicing of transformers, generators, UPS systems, distribution panels, lighting, and other electrical infrastructure.
Respond promptly to electrical breakdowns and malfunctions, diagnose the root cause, and implement effective repairs to minimize disruption to clinical operations.
Monitor the performance of electrical systems and identify areas for improvement in efficiency and reliability.
Ensure the proper operation of backup power systems (generators, UPS) and conduct regular testing.
Manage and maintain the center’s lighting systems, ensuring optimal illumination levels and energy efficiency.
Oversee the electrical aspects of HVAC and other building services.
Troubleshooting and Problem Solving:
Diagnose and resolve complex electrical problems in power distribution, control systems, and medical equipment interfaces.
Utilize electrical testing equipment to identify faults and ensure safe operation.
Develop and implement temporary solutions to maintain essential services during repairs.
Safety and Compliance:
Ensure all electrical installations and maintenance activities comply with relevant safety regulations, codes, and hospital policies (e.g., Ethiopian Electrical Code, IEC standards, healthcare-specific electrical safety guidelines).
Conduct regular safety checks of electrical systems and identify potential hazards.
Implement and enforce lockout/tagout procedures for electrical work.
Participate in safety training programs and promote a culture of safety within the facilities department.
Project Support and Upgrades:
Participate in the planning and execution of minor electrical upgrades, modifications, and new equipment installations.
Assist in the review of electrical drawings and specifications for new projects.
Oversee the work of external electrical contractors, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards.
Documentation and Record Keeping:
Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment performance.
Update electrical drawings and schematics as needed.
Manage equipment manuals and technical documentation.
Collaboration and Communication:
Work closely with other members of the engineering and facilities departments, medical staff, and administrative personnel.
Communicate effectively with external contractors and suppliers.
Provide technical support and guidance to other departments on electrical-related issues.
Prepare reports on electrical system status and maintenance activities as required.

About You
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from a recognized university.
At least five years of relevant experience in electrical maintenance and operations, preferably within a healthcare or similar critical infrastructure environment.
Strong knowledge of electrical codes and standards (e.g., Ethiopian Electrical Code, IEC).
Familiarity with power distribution systems, generators, UPS systems, lighting systems, and control systems.
Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair a wide range of electrical equipment and systems.
Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
Strong understanding of electrical safety principles and practices.
Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
Good communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills.
Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively.
Fluency in English and Amharic language is desirable.
