Bidvest Tank Terminals has an opportunity for an Environmental Officer. This opportunity exists within the SHE department, based in Durban, reporting to the Environmental Specialist. The candidate must meet the following minimum criteria:
Minimum Requirements
Matric
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Management.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the field of environmental management preferably in the chemical / petrochemical industry
Solid understanding of ISO14001
Experience with environmental monitoring tools and data analysis software.
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work under pressure in high-stakes operational environments
Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the Environmental Specialist in ensuring the safe, efficient and economical running of all Environmental activities for the Region
Ensure compliance to all environmental authorisations, permits and licences and ensure records are kept for inspections by Regulators
Liaises constructively and consults with employees, peers, Independent Contractors and Suppliers, to ensure the development and maintenance of environmental standards
Ensure EMPs are up to date and are complied with
Maintain communication flow to and from the SHE department and other departments and create a positive Environmental awareness
Lead the Terminal environmental effort by liaising with contractors to ensure that all agreed IMS procedures are implemented
Investigate and report on the cause of environmental accidents / incidents and near misses
Ensure that adequate corrective action is undertaken and recommend preventative measures
Ensure that any environmental incidents that occur on the Terminal are recorded and are properly investigated and closed out satisfactorily
Conduct daily site visits and ensure all non-conformances are corrected immediately
Understand the On-site Emergency Response Plan as well as the Major Hazardous Installation requirements
Ensures that the legal and moral duties of the employer to “care for” the environment are effectively carried out
Collects and logs ESG data e.g. energy, water, waste etc
Controls and Maintains Environmental records – waste invoices, waste manifests, permits, licences
Ensures compliance with ISO 14001 system
Participates in internal and external audits
Conduct site inspection to identify deviations and prompt action
Monitoring of storm water and effluent drainage. Ensuring that samples of storm water and effluent are taken and sent to the lab for testing as well as reconciling results
Monitoring of air quality and e-noses alarm activations
Ensures that all environmental aspects and impacts are assessed and appropriately addressed.
Generation of environmental cost centre Purchase Requests and tracking of delivery of items/servicesEnsures compliance with Environmental legal requirements
Ensures appropriate education/ awareness programmes are in place
Monitors and appropriately reduces costs of waste and spill material
Participates in Berth and site walkabouts with TNPA
Conduct LDAR Programme
Knowledge, skills and abilities required:
Comprehensive knowledge of the Environmental management systems and National Ports Act
Strong Knowledge of Policy and Environmental Legislation
Excellent communication (written and verbal) and report writing skills
Advanced computer literacy and Microsoft kit skills
