    SUMMARY 

    The primary function of this position is to join the ecological monitoring team, assisting with infield data collection, wildlife monitoring and volunteer management. Over a typical six-week cycle, the position will involve four weeks based at Aloe Camp, comprised of two weeks monitoring and managing volunteers and two weeks of full-time pangolin monitoring. The final two weeks will be based at Swilleys camp, monitoring and managing volunteers. The position reports to the Phinda Research Manager.

    OUTPUTS:

    Volunteers:

    Manage the volunteer programmes, including the volunteer houses, vehicles etc.
    Manage volunteers and students 
    Ensuring cleanliness of camp, food orders, logistics, maintenance etc.   

    Data collection:

    Daily Data Collection of Elephant, Cheetah, Lion, White Rhino, Buffalo, Pangolin and Black Rhino amongst other ecological data and species  
    Radio tracking (using telemetry) as and when required  
    Camera trapping and drive counts as and when required 
    Assisting the conservation management team with the collection of various samples
    Assisting external researchers & students in their data collection    

    Sample Collection:

    Assist with collection of ecological samples and data of immobilized animals  
    Assist with the collection of samples for external researchers & students as and when required 

    ID Kits:

    Compiling, updating and maintaining of ID kits for various species 
    Assist conservation management team when required  

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:   

    Decent knowledge of Maputaland and Zululand ecosystems
    Strong computer literacy
    Valid PDP and Code 8 Drivers License
    Experience with 4×4/wilderness driving preferable
    Minimum FGASA level one or BSc Degree in Conservation Biology/Wildlife Management/Ecology or similar field

    Runs Batch Reactions of Lignin paying close attention to quality of product produced
    Ensures safe correct dosing of chemicals.
    Ensure valves are correctly lined up for required products and communicates with the Spray Dryer operator to ensure levels are correct and no contamination occurs.
    Monitors reaction exotherm and ensures the correct peak ratios are reached
    Runs 25kg Bagging plant during Modified lignin runs with the assistance of the Assistant SD operator and the SD operator
    Visually checks, Chemical Storage Areas, Pumps, Tanks, conveyors, chutes, and other plant machinery for defects which may require attention and reports to the Production Foreman. (Autonomous Maintenance).
    Maintains housekeeping and safety by keeping his plant clean, tidy, and adhering to safety practices and procedures.
    Assists in the Sodium Sulphite plant.
    Samples liquor after the reaction and pumps the correct tanks based on results.
    Carries out any duties/tasks as requested by supervision
    Reducing waste, Preventing spills
    Meeting environmental targets that apply to his sphere of influence
    Complying with hazardous chemical handling procedures

    What are we looking for?

    Relevant Qualifications & Experience

    Key Performance Areas

    Raw Materials & Warehouse Management

    Full management of raw material stores (on-site and off-site), including secondary packaging and divider-cleaning operations.
    Maintain batch control and FIFO processes for HDPE, PP, and all materials, including cataloging regrind and issuing oldest batches first.
    Oversee GRV processes and ensure accurate documentation.
    Identify control risks and implement corrective measures across stock counts, stock movements, and warehouse processes.
    Manage the raw material shuttle truck and associated logistics.

    Stock Control & Quality Checks

    Conduct weekly, monthly, annual stock takes, as well as ad-hoc spot checks.
    Accountable for all raw material and packaging stock variances.

    Perform incoming inspections on raw materials and packaging to ensure specifications are met:

    HDPE/PP – bag weights
    Secondary packaging – dimensions and artwork
    Pallets – dimensions
    Bags – dimensions and microns
    Decoration – colour and artwork accuracy
    Administer all raw material transactions via SAP.
    Ensure timely and accurate distribution of raw materials to production.
    Maintain adequate buffer levels of secondary packaging and communicate weekly with procurement on stock balances.

    Equipment, Waste & Compliance

    Oversee maintenance and care of off-site equipment (divider cleaner, floor cleaner, operating equipment).
    Ensure high levels of internal and external customer satisfaction.

    Manage all waste processes, including:

    Collection from plants
    Sorting in collaboration with waste partners
    Supplier collections
    Selling to approved third parties
    SAP scrapping and waste reconciliations
    Ensure correct documentation for invoicing, receipts, and all relevant ISO-related requirements (ISO 9001 & FSSC 22000).

    Budgeting, Projects & Leadership

    Participate in departmental budgeting and forecasting (wages, consumables, maintenance, projects).
    Drive departmental projects to completion and ensure efficiency improvements.
    Manage departmental budget.
